Ijara Member of Parliament Sophia Abdi Noor said employment to the young people will allow them to make a positive contribution to society and help drive the county’s growth and stability of the economy.
Ms Noor said youth unemployment has been majorly blamed for insecurity and drug abuse in the county.
She further said that many youth from the region are being lured into criminal groups or joining militia groups because of rising unemployment and poverty levels.
The programme will target more than 900 youths in Ijara constituency which will seek to positively change the lives of the youth in the County.
The MP said next month, a similar programme will be launched in Hulugho sub-county where it will also benefit 900 jobless youth.
“Several of our youth have been forced to engage in crime and use of drugs due to lack of job opportunities.”
“The programme will give our young men and women who did not do well in school opportunity to engage in meaningful employment and better their lives,” said the legislator.
The MP said the initiative will also help to reduce inter-clan conflicts by bringing together all youth irrespective of their ethnic backgrounds.
