The woman was allegedly taken to the hospital following a road accident and was in serious condition but the nurses reportedly took over four hours to have her transferred to Nyangena hospital in Kisii for further treatment. This was because her family could not raise Sh300 for the ambulance.

The irate members of the public engaged the nurses and the entire hospital staff in a physical confrontation for allegedly neglecting Jane Mogoi and it took the intervention of the National Youth Service officers to control the situation.

The tension that began Friday at around 8 last for over three hours forced the nurses and the hospital staff to seek safety from National Youth Service officers who had camped nearby.

Confirming the incident Kisii South OCPD David Mburukua said that the county ambulance vehicle had a mechanical breakdown and could not be used to take the patient to Nyangena Hospital for medication.

“I would like to call upon the residents to calm down as we will ensure that no other case like that rises again,” he added.

He explained that he has deployed security officers to guard the facility claiming there were plans by the members of the public to storm the facility again.

The body of the deceased has since been moved to Nyagena mortuary.
