There is improved security in Kinanie and Magatani Divisions of Athi River sub-county, Machakos county lately, says area assistant county commissioner Rukia Chetechi.
Speaking at a Nyumba Kumi and community policing leadership bonding meeting at a hotel in Chyumvi town on Sunday, Chetechi attributed the improvement to effective and successful implementation of nyumba kumi initiative.
“Nyumba Kumi is working in Kinanie and Magatani divisions, members of the public have understood the concept and are now enjoying its benefits. We want to make these divisions models of Nyumba Kumi execution nationally,” said Chetechi.
The meeting was attended by 200 leaders of the two initiatives from 19 villages in the divisions.
Chetechi said there were high incidences of crime including robbery with violence, burglary, murder, stock theft, illicit brew and drug and substance abuse in the region before the initiatives were launched sometime in October last year.
“As leadership of Nyumba Kumi in the divisions, we persist to know everybody, whether businessman, foreign investor, developer, landlord or locals even if the person is visiting a relative for a day, our slogan is ‘Jua jirani yako’ and this has adversely helped us enhance security in the entire region,” said Chetechi.
Chetechi said all the leaders had been well trained on their roles and mandate to enhance community participation in ensuring the society is safe at all times, during the day and night throughout the year.
