The Nyumba Kumi initiative in North Eastern region has been hailed for conclusively dealing with smuggled goods and human trafficking.

According to an administrator in the region, Nyumba Kumi elders have succeeded in availing timely intelligence information to security agents, thereby helping in reduction of human trafficking and even infiltration of contraband goods from neighboring Somalia country.

Julius Maiyo, who is the Merti Sub-county administrator, said locals had embraced the security initiative that has largely improved security situation by resolving about 80 percent of all cases through the traditional mediation method before opting for police intervention.

“Locals are vigilant and they have helped in sealing all loopholes used by traders to smuggle contrabanded goods and human trafficking from neighboring countries. These crimes have been a thorn in our fresh for quite some time now,” the administrator revealed.

Maiyo further revealed that the village security committees have adequately planned for the impending drought, where herders from neighboring counties by allocating separate grounds from the rival locals to avoid conflicts.
