Over 500 members of Nyumba Kumi initiative from Mavoko Sub County will from Tuesday undergo a one-month training to enhance their skills in community policing.
Addressing the public during Madaraka Day Celebrations at Mavoko Stadium in Athi River on Monday, Mavoko Deputy County Commissioner, Makori Kodeck said the training will equip them with skills necessary in ensuring security in the community.
They will also acquire skills on how to work with security agents.
Makori lauded members of the group for playing an important role in curbing insecurity in the region arguing that the initiative has effectively worked since its inception in Mavoko.
He said the national government was committed to supporting the initiative. “Nyumba Kumi initiative is working and hence has to be supported,” he said.
The commissioner said the initiative is a good strategy and if well implemented and its members supported and motivated, it can end insecurity in the entire Sub County and in the country as a whole.
Makori said all residents have a role to play by reporting security related issues within their neighbourhoods.
"All of us have roles to play in ensuring security in Mavoko. Take information to police, chiefs or members of nyumba kumi initiative to make the region secure," said Makori.
Makori, who was in the company of the area police boss Mr Mutoro Kizito, lauded the residents for turning up for the Madaraka Day celebrations in big numbers.
He said it was an improvement from the past where most public functions in the region were attended mostly by children.
