A suspected thief escaped death narrowly on Wednesday evening at Riamasagara, Kisii south sub-county after an angry mob attacked him on suspicion that he is among the criminals who have been robbing residents in the area.

John Kirera, one of the Nyumba Kumi official said the angry mob descended on the suspect as he was on his way to Suneka market.

“The suspect could be dead by now. The mob had attacked him with kicks and blows before we arrived and rescued him,” said Kirera.

Kirera urged locals not to take the law into their hands but instead surrender the suspect to police.

A resident Mercy Mong’ina said it is wrong for the Nyumba Kumi officials to rescue a thief who has no mercy when stealing people’s property.

“We can not keep on living in the same society with criminals who don’t want to eat from their sweat. Local government officers must ensure crimes end or else we take the law into our hands. The suspect who has just been rescued has been stealing maize, beans and electronics in the area, ” she stated.

The suspect was taken to Montonto Police station for further interrogation.
