Nyumba Kumi officers from Chania in Gatundu North want the national government to offer incentives to enable them effectively carry out their duties.
According to their leader Joseph Kinyua, the small stipend will motivate them in the war against outlawed liquor, arresting insecurity among other societal vices.
Speaking after a meeting with the officers, Kinyua suggested a payment of Sh5,000 for every officer monthly from the national government adding that the pay will help them strengthen their families as they dutifully concentrate on serving the public.
He said that security was an issue of the whole public adding that the national government should start a programme to empower village elders who will thereby promote security and unity between community members.
“Insecurity and illiteracy are the major blockades in achieving sustainable development in Chania ward, the government should be generous enough and give these officers a small stipend as a form of appreciation,” said Kinyua.
He noted that village elders play a vital role in maintaining peace in their communities but most of them were not skilled enough.
Kinyua challenged the national government and other well-wishers to back a new training programme for the elders which are aimed to equip them with conflict resolution skills so as to empower their community cautiously.
