Lack of sugarcane has forced the closer of Nzoia Sugar Company temporarily.

According to the company’s Head of Communication Gilbert Awino said the company was facing challenges acquiring canes for milling, but are working on modalities to improve the situation.

Awino added that growoing the canes was a big challenge because of the dry weather, adversely affecting their operation.

"We have stopped milling because we do not have cane now. We had a challenge during the dry season and this has even affected us now. We are in the process of working and ensuring the issue is sorted," he said.

The company is now working on avenues to resolve the issue quickly, noting that their zone was dwindling with the coming of other surar millers.

They however have another headache, ensuring they get enough funds to maintain the machines since they wll be uot of operation for a while.

Sugar milling companies in the Western Region have been affected in the recent past, with pay wrangles between farmers and the management of companies slowing operations almost to a halt.

During their tour of the region, President Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto promised to ensure the companies are back on their feet, by giving them more funds.
