World 5,000 metres champion Hellen Obiri plans to switch to 10,000m in 2018 Commonwealth Games that will be held April 4-15 in Gold Coast, Australia. If her wish comes true, it will be Obiri’s first time to compete in the 25-lap race.

The Kenya Defence Forces Corporal and 2016 Rio Olympics 5,000m silver medalist represented Kenya in 1,500m in 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. However, the 27-year-old Obiri plans to use the championships on March 1-4 in Birmingham, Britain to regain her World Indoor title before shifting track allegiance during the Commonwealth Games.

Obiri was a silver medalist in the World Indoor 3,000m competition, 2014 Poland, finishing behind Genzebe Dibaba after winning the competition in Istanbul, 2011. She was sixth in the 1,500m 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games which were won by Faith Chepng’etich.

“I want to reclaim by Indoor title before attempting the 10,000m crown at Commonwealth games,” Obiri said as quoted by Nation.

She will also take part in the Africa Senior Championships in Assaba, Nigeria between 1-5 August.
