Kisii Senator Chris Obure has called for an amendment to the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) Act.
He says the amendment will pave way for the establishment of an independent body to hear and determine examination complaints and appeals from schools and parents in the country.
Obure expressed concern that, it was ironical for KNEC to set, supervise and mark national examinations. He argued that there will be conflict of interest for the same council to handle examination complaints and appeals against its withholding and cancelling of national examinations.
Speaking in Kisii town at the weekend, the senator called for the establishment of an independent body modelled along a tribunal structures to investigate and deal with national examinations complaints and appeals, to ensure justice is done to the children of Kenya.
"I am of the opinion that the KNEC Act as it is currently will never be fair to complainants since the council is everything and cannot incriminate itself in handling examination cancellation complaints against it," observed Obure
He challenged members of the Senate and National Assembly to support his push for an amendment to the KNEC Act to pave way the establishment of an independent body mandated by the constitution to receive, hear and determine examination complaints raised by various education stakeholders.
