The decision by Kisii Deputy Governor Joash Maangi to join gubernatorial race, months after declaring support for senator Chris Obure, who is also keen to take on Governor James Ongwae, may tilt gubernatorial race in favour of the incumbent.

On Sunday, Maangi, a man behind Obure's decision to ditch ODM party, retracted his earlier decision to support Obure's bid.

"I am ready to take this county to great heights and it is time my colleagues support my bid. The county needs fresh and young minds top prosper," he told his supporters at Gianchere.

Maangi's decision has caused jitters within the Jubilee team, which was initially united against governor James Ongwae with Bomachoge Chache MP Simon Ogari being the first to call for sobriety.

"We have a common enemy in the name of Ongwae and if we start fighting among ourselves, then let us be ready for Ongwae's second term," he said on Sunday at his backyard.

In the initial agreement among the Jubilee leaders, Obure was tipped to be flag bearer while Maangi was lined to deputise him. Charles Nyachae was to run for senator.

Governor Ongwae on the other hand is the sole ODM candidate and has been depending on the party's conservative voters to counter the emergence of formidable Jubilee team.
