Nominated MP Oburu Oginga has yet again hinted that the opposition will boycott this year’s general elections should MPs fail to agree on the controversial amendments on the election laws.
Oburu also insists that the opposition will accept nothing other re-committal of the controversial amendments to the joint Senate-National Assembly committee, which drafted the laws.
On Monday, Oburu who is a close confidant of his brother and opposition leader Raila Odinga said the president already had an extra advantage by having powers to appoint IEBC chair.
“It will be meaningless to go to polls where one side is determined to water down what we had initially agreed as a team. These amendments should be subjected to joint Senate-National Assembly committee,” he said.
“We agreed that voting will be electronic because the president already has powers to choose the electoral chairperson. We will not have option than boycotting if they can’t agree such a simple thing,” he added.
Senate Legal Committee is currently reviewing the amendments and is expected to table its recommendations on Thursday for a subsequent debate in the senate.
