Speaking to the press on Monday at the county assembly buildings, Ochele noted that most residents are normally displaced during the heavy rains. This is after the bursting of River Nyando's banks resulting to flooding in the region.

He further explained that Nyando is the most populous sub-county in Kisumu with rice and sugarcane farming being dominant.

Ochele appealed to the county government to allocate funds towards the construction of a dam across the river to trap water and prevent flooding.

"Devolution has come to help our people in this century. We cannot continue having our people being displaced due to frequent flooding," said Ochele.

His sentiments were echoed by Kisumu Senate manager Babu Karan who said that rice farmers would benefit from the dam project.

"With the construction of a dam, rice farmers can use the water for irrigation especially during the dry spells," Karan said.
