The activity was declared illegal in an agreement between the area residents and the Machakos County government until further notice.

Led by their Member of County Assembly (MCA) Felix Ngui, the residents threatened to demonstrate for the removal of OCPD Mugo from the area.

Speaking on Thursday in Katangi Market, Ngui expressed his disappointment in the OCPD following a release of a lorry that had been arrested illegally ferrying sand from the area.

“The residents have reported a lorry that had been filled with sand and the Police arrested the drivers but the OCPD released the lorry without taking any documents of evidence. This means he is in support of the illegal sand sale,” said MCA Ngui.

He further stated that residents had launched complaints that some sand buyers are threatening them using guns when they block the sand harvesting points.

“We have known that the Police are involved in the illegal sale and as residents we will protect our environment and property by our own means,” added Ngui.

However the OCPD refuted the claims of supporting the illegal sale of sand stating that he had taken evidence and the needed information from the lorry that had been arrested earlier.
