After nearly a decade as a free man ODM leader Raila Odinga made an impromptu visit to his former detention Centre, Shimo La Tewa.

For three years in 80s, Odinga made the prison his home after President Daniel Arap Moi’s regime dimmed him a threat to national security.

Although not highly publicized, Odinga revealed his brief stopover at the legendary prison when he addressed a mammoth crowd at Mtwapa on Sunday.

“I am not a visitor in Mtwapa because I spent three years at Shimo La Tewa. It just on the other side and I was there a while ago,” he said.

Odinga further said: “We used to move around this place in prison trucks so I know here well. I am one of your own and I understand coastal problems.”

During to Kilifi tour, Odinga made several stopovers across the County and held a major rally in Malindi town on Sunday evening.

He is seeking to consolidate his support in the region that has traditionally backed opposition in the last decade.
