Opposition leader Raila Odinga has hailed Zimbabwe people following military coup that led to unprecedented departure of strongman Robert Mugabe.

On Tuesday, Mugabe resigned after being on helm for the past three decades, in a leadership that saw the countries economy crumble.

‘You have succeeded in peacefully overthrowing the dictatorship and this is the right channel to prosperous future,” he said in a statement.

For years, Odinga has been associated with Zimbabwe partly due to his strong ties with former Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai.

Further, Odinga urged the transitional government to organize free, fair and transparent elections adding that it will be fundamental for international image of Zimbabwe.

“Whatever short term arrangements the government may establish, the path should lead to a free, fair and transparent election,” he said.

In Kenya, Raila has refused to recognize President Uhuru Kenyatta’s victory which was upheld by the Supreme Court.
