Despite cancelling Tuesday’s anti – IEBC demonstrations to visit families of police brutality, NASA demonstrations have been suspended further in honour of those who died.
Since August 11th, when IEBC declared Uhuru Kenyatta president in the annulled polls, Amnesty International claims that over 33 people have died in separate incidents in which police are directly linked.
And a statement by the Raila Odinga led coalition, declares the countrywide protests suspended, without giving an indication of when they are likely to resume.
“In honour of innocent victims of the state sponsored terror, our protests will stay suspended,” read the statement, despite initial statement that indicated that the protests would resume on Wednesday.
It further said: “On Friday, we will mark the memory of these victims as heroes of the struggle for electoral justice in a venue that will be revealed later.”
Through lawyer James Orengo, Odinga had called for daily protests to push for more reforms in the IEBC among them sacking of a number of officials he accuses of bungling August elections.
In the statement, the NASA boss, through his communication department says he is exploring means to hold IG Joseph Boinet and Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i accountable of the deaths.
