[Photo|Raila Odinga]"After years of sowing mostly havoc on an otherwise rich and once promising nation, Mr Robert Mugabe finally resigned yesterday, leaving behind close to 40 years of deferred and stolen dreams, frustrations and a series of might-have-beens.What Mr Mugabe was never able to destroy in Zimbabwe, however, is the determination of the people to have a country and a regime in which they can pursue their aspirations to the fullest of their God-given ability.I congratulate the people of Zimbabwe for standing up for their dignity and that of their beautiful country. In rising against a leader who long lost the path to the promise of the country and aspirations of the citizens, the people of Zimbabwe have sent a powerful message that citizens may get oppressed and seem beaten, but it is only for a moment. In the fullness of time, the citizens have both their say and their way.The people of Zimbabwe have also proven to the world, and Africa in particular, that the only guarantee for durable stability and peace is democracy, expressed in regular free, fair and credible elections in which citizens are allowed to freely pick their leaders.I offer my solidarity with the patriots of Zimbabwe at this critical moment and wish them success as they seek to put their country back on the path of democracy, prosperity and respect for human rights and the rule of law."
