An Orange Democratic Movement allied blogger was released from Muthaiga police station on Wednesday after spending at least twelve hours behind the bars.
Vincent Osumo alias Generali Osumo, a University of Nairobi student was apprehended by the police under unclear circumstances leading to a public outcry on social media.
It’s alleged that Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria was behind the woes of the vibrant blogger after he reportedly faked Kuria’s twitter account and subsequently posting on it.
However, the arrest did not go well with Osumo’s lead counsel Steve Mogaka, a renowned constitutional lawyer who took the MP on task accusing him of using the government to infringe people’s freedom of speech.
“I am mesmerized with Kuria’s inferiority complex because he has been hiding behind the government to infringe people’s fundamental rights. He has wrongly used the police to intimidate an innocent student who only sort to know the origin of a twitter post,” Mogaka told the reporter on phone.
“We cannot allow such arbitrary arrests targeting opposition supporters. Kuria should have worked with the police to invite the young man for questioning rather than arresting him without a clear account. This isn’t the Kenya we want and Kuria and the police should learn to follow the law,” Mogaka said after securing Osumo’s release
The Tweet that Osumo is alleged to have created intimated that Kuria had accepted that Cord was a popular party in Gusii region hence he had withdrawn his intentions to lead campaigns in the region.
