ODM Secretary for political affairs James Wandayi has hinted that the party may opt to give a direct nomination in the looming Homa Bay Senatorial race.
The fate of the eight aspirants who are eying the post on an ODM ticket now hang in the balance, after Wandayi, in his statement hinted that direct nomination would be the only option to end the stalemate.
Wandayi, who is also the Ugunja Member of Parliament, said that the ODM constitution and nomination rules provides for various ways of conducting party primaries, including election through universal suffrage, delegates system and finally through direct nomination, which he says would be the only option given the short time given to them by the IEBC.
Speaking during the launch of Uwezo fund cheques distribution exercise at Kolalo grounds in his Ugunja constituency, the legislator hinted that they might make that decision in the best interest of the party, and in the interest of the people of Homa Bay County.
He also hinted that they will call for ODM party grassroots elections of party officials next year across the country, so as to have credible delegates to avert a possibility of having doubt over delegate lists.
Wandayi has also said they will amend their nomination guidelines and rules to contain the tendency of using money to cause confusion in the party.
He argues that there is a habit where some candidates come into the party last minute, and then use money to corrupt the minds of the delegates like was witnessed in Homa Bay, therefore sabotaging democracy in the party.
