Mr Odinga received the party's backing during celebrations to mark the ODM's ten years of existence in Mombasa.

The celebrations were held at the Mama Ngina Grounds on Saturday.

Raila is now expected to square it out with candidates Kalonzo Musyoka's (Wiper party) and Moses Wetangula's (Ford Kenya) and select one candidate to face President Uhuru Kenyatta during the elections.

The three, are the three main politicians constituting the opposition Cord coalition.

Party supporters at the event broke into song and dance as Governors Hassan Joho (Mombasa) and Wycliffe Oparanya (Kakamega) rose to endorse Mr Odinga.

There had been speculation that Mr Odinga would endorse someone else to fly the Cord flag during the polls.

An opinion poll recently released by Ipsos Synovate indicated that many Kenyans wanted the former prime minister to retire from politics.
