Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi has asked police in the Coast region to stop intimidating and harassing NASA politicians and their supporters.Addressing journalists outside the Kilifi police station, Kingi said the current developments mounted by the security agencies on their supporters were bringing unnecessary tension in the country. The Governor made the remarks after he had gone to the police station to inquire about the arrest of Kilifi politician Nicholas Mrima Wanyepe.Wanyepe was arrested on Saturday in Mtwapa Town and is being detained at the Kilifi police station.Confirming the arrest, Kilifi county police commander Ben Kogo said Mr Wanyepe will be arraigned in court on Monday.Kogo accused Wanyepe of being in possession materials that would likely incite residents against the government. The police boss, however, declined to divulge more information about the contents of the materials. On his part, Kingi said Wanyepe had told him that he was arrested for an offence he allegedly committed in Kisumu. The county boss said Wanyepe was called by officers from the Mtwapa police base who claimed they wanted to get some information from him, only for detectives to arrest him.The governor issued an ultimatum to the police to release Mr Wanyepe by Monday afternoon."I could not support him, but because his rights are being violated I will not sit back and watch. If he will not have been released by Monday afternoon then as leaders, we shall know the next step to be taken,” said Kingi.
