Veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga was conspicuously absent at the funeral of former Nyeri governor who lost his life in a grisly road accident.
However, an ODM governor, Wycliffe Oparanya, who is a close ally of Odinga graced the Gakuru's send-off today.
Speaking on behalf of the Council of Governors at Kagumo High School where the event happened, Oparanya eulogised Governor Gakuru as a great statesman who was motivated by love of country.
''I have known daktari for over ten years... The first person who took me through the vision 2030 was the man lying here... We have lost a very brilliant person; a very resourceful person... I have lost a friend,'' Kakamega governor Wycliffe Oparanya said.
Politicians from across the political spectrum attended the ceremony.
President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto were also present.
