Taita Taveta County Governor John Mruttu has continued to express confidence that he will retain his seat ahead of the August amidst tough competition. The incumbent will be banking on his performance scoreboard to retain his seat. “We have made great strides in economic development despite financial constraints. Key sectors of the economy like education, health, roads, water, mining and agriculture have been revamped to spur economic growth in the once-marginalised county,” said the governor, as quoted by the Standard. Six aspirants have already declared interest in the county’s top seat as the election date draws closer. Former Central Bank of Kenya Deputy Governor Jacinta Mwatela becomes the latest hopeful to announce her governorship bid. Mwatela will be contesting for the seat on an Amani National Congress (ANC) ticket. The banker joins Dan Mwazo (Jubilee), former Permanent Secretary Emmanuel Kisombe, former Coast Water Services Board chairman Granton Samboja (Wiper Party), Wundanyi MP Thomas Mwadeghu (ODM)and Mombasa businessman Erastus Katani, who is yet to disclose his political outfit. Mruttu, who belongs to the minority Taita community, will have to pitch tents in different parts of the county to woo residents to support his bid.
