As part of the tradition, the ODM leader had to pass through the party's headquarters before meeting county leadership.

But rivalry between the then West Mugirango MP James Gesami and Governor Nyagarama seemed to eclipse the trip with both camps working hard to overshadow each other.

And few hours to Raila's visit, goons apparently funded by Nyagarama, descended on ODM offices and smeared them with human waste.

"To take advantage over them, we had to employ all tactics including pouring human waste," recalled Jason Mogaka, one of the governor's supporters.

He added: "They had backing from the party and we were struggling by then. We had to handle them properly."

A part from the offices, the team also poured raw sewer at the assembly grounds where the party leadership had agreed to host Raila.

When he arrived at the offices, due to bad smell, Raila could only last for five minutes before proceeding to Guardian Hotel.

Later Raila could hold rallies at the Assembly grounds and Nyamaiya stadium to satisfy both parties. Nyagarama beat Gesami in ODM primaries before winning 2017 polls.
