The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) has termed the party primaries that concluded last month as ‘shambolic’.

Speaking when releasing a report on the party nominations, KNCHR chairperson Kagwiria Mbogori noted the primaries were marred with massive electoral malpractices which included bribery, manipulation of voters’ lists, inadequate voting materials, missing of names, misuse of public resources and inadequate security.

According to the report, Raila Odinga’s ODM party is leading in cases of violence witnessed during the primaries by 53 per cent followed by President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Jubilee party with 35 per cent.

In terms of voter bribery, Jubilee party topped with 59 per cent while ODM came second with 25 per cent.

“KNCHR monitored 223 polling centres in 33 counties with 29 hot spots noted. 116 cases of missing names were reported in Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet, Kiambu, Murang’a, Kericho and Nyamira counties. We also captured 17 violence cases,” said the KNCHR vice chair, George Morara.
