Nyando MP Jared Okello has chickened out of an earlier commitment to resign if NASA leader Raila Odinga fails to take oath of office as People's President.
Instead, the MP on Thursday said he will fight for Kenyans’ rights from parliament.
This new development follows a series of meetings with residents, relatives and colleagues in the political realm, new confessions by the first time lawmaker allude.
“I met the principals on December 21 when they expressed apprehension and advised that we collectively fight for the people (within parliament)," he said.
"They opine this will deter horrors from being visited upon innocent people in the opposing side."
The MP defended his latest announcement saying Raila Odinga had reaffirmed his commitment to taking oath of office.
“Since I made that pronouncement, Raila has coincidentally reaffirmed his commitment to carry the Bible, ad take oath of office. He has highlighted the measures to be taken before the grand event,” Okello said.
The legislator was addressing members of the press at his home.
On December 18, Okello threatened to resign in two weeks in the event Raila was not sworn-in as president of the People's Republic of Kenya.
He made the otherwise unexpected vow during a burial ceremony of veteran radio journalist Agao Patrobas in Nyakach.
He said then: "I went to Parliament, not to sit on Opposition benches, but to support President Raila Odinga's policies as he discharges his mandate from State House. I had scanned the environment, followed the polls and was confident of a Raila win.”
"I can't sit pretty in Parliament with people I know connived to snatch Raila's victory while he languishes in the cold."
But now he says he will stay after listening to people from various quarters. He said on Thursday the voice of the people is the voice of God.
