In a county like Kisumu where ODM enjoys huge following, winning an elective position on a different political party can be counted as luck.
The 2013 election saw Muhoroni MP James Onyango Koyoo emerge out of nowhere and beat Prof Ayiecho Olweny who had served for two uninterrupted terms and had the blessings of Opposition Leader Raila Odinga.
Vying on little-known People's Democratic Party ( PDP), little-known Koyoo pulled a surprise when he defeated the incumbent.
After the win, Koyoo has been Olweny's main headache and the biggest barrier standing between the Prof and a comeback in politics.
In the run to the 2017 election, Koyoo defected to ODM, a move that would prove injurious to Prof. Olweny's own political future.
The two faced off during the ODM nominations and Koyoo once again proved his political might when he bagged the ticket.
His opponent unsuccessfully tried to block the election on grounds that the MP was not validly nominated but his appeal was dismissed by the Supreme Court.
The incumbent was overwhelmingly elected for a second term in the August 8 contest.
With focus now shifting to 2022, Prof. Olweny looks set to face the same fate at the hands of the 'notorious' MP.
