An ODM MP from Mombasa is in trouble after he endorsed Deputy President William Ruto's 2022 presidential bid.
Badi Twalib Bady (Jomvu, ODM) may be punished by ODM for "going against party principals" by supporting Ruto who is seeking to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta after the 2022 general polls.
The MP was on Tuesday among a group of opposition MPs who said they would fully support Ruto during the election because of the DP's positive development record and ability to unite Kenyans.
"Coast will support Ruto because we know he has the interests of Kenyans at heart and we know he has the ability to unite Kenyans," Twalib said in Kwale at an event attended by Ruto.
He said as a Kenyan he has every right to support whoever he thinks is best positioned to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Following his utterances, ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna said the party will move in with speed and punish all its members supporting Ruto's State House bid in 2022.
"It is shocking indeed that some of those engaged in these premature campaigns for Ruto are members of the Party’s NEC who are expected to abide by its decisions," Sifuna said on Wednesday in a statement as quoted by Daily Nation.
He said the decision by Twalib to support Ruto is against the spirit of promoting unity among Kenyans following opposition chief Raila Odinga's recent meeting with Uhuru.
