Homa-Bay Town MP Peter Opondo Kaluma has blamed embattled Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman Wafula Chebukati for the trouble shunting the polls agency.
Kaluma claims that Chebukati is the reason to why the commission is on the verge of collapsing.
The ODM lawmaker says that IEBC would not experience the issue sit facing now if Chebukati had listened and agreed to NASA’ irreducible minimums and demands.
He said that Chebukati was rigid to electoral reforms and didn’t want change.
“Mr Chebukati should not blame anyone for what is happening at the commission because he started it himself,” he told journalists at the Parliament Buildings in Nairobi on Thursday.
Kaluma said that NASA push for reforms including the sacking of the commission chief Executive Office Ezra Chiloba would have to save the polls agency.
He said that the commission is a letdown to Kenyans and should be overhauled for credible future elections.
The ODM MP further said that the IEBC boss and the commissioners must be probed over the bungled August 8 presidential election that was nullified by the Supreme Court.
“People who mismanaged the August 8 presidential election that Honorable Raila Amollo Odinga won must be brought to book and not to be allowed to resign and walk scot-free,” he added.
The MP said that Chebukati has nothing to in office after the resignation of three commissioner’s on Monday.
Pressure is piling on the IEBC boss to quit after the resignation of the commission vice chairperson Connie Nkatha Maina and commissioner’s Paul Kurgat and Margaret Mwachanya on Monday.
In their resignation, the three commissioners accused Chebukati of failing to provide the right leadership at the polls agency.
The resignation came days after the suspension of CEO Ezra Chiloba over tender-related issues.
