As the debate on constitutional change through a referendum is gaining momentum ahead of the 2022 election, the fate of President Uhuru Kenyatta still hangs on the balance with a section of leaders vehemently opposing his return to occupy the yet-to-be-formed powerful Prime Minister position.

During Labour Day Celebrations at Uhuru Park on Tuesday, COTU Secretary-General Francis Atwoli stirred a controversial debate when he suggested that the future government should accommodate Uhuru Kenyatta as Prime Minister as he 'is still young to go home'.

However, while speaking during an interview on Citizen TV on Wednesday, Homa Bay Woman Representative Gladys Wanga opposed Atwoli's position.

Instead, the vocal ODM legislator urged the President to "resist" any attempt to make a return in 2022 at the end of his term.

"If there is anything that President Uhuru Kenyatta must resist, then it is the thought of coming back as Prime Minister in 2022," said Wanga.

Wanga's position contradicts that of Gem MP Elisha Odhiambo who a couple of weeks ago said that they will support Uhuru's premiership bid if that is what it will take for NASA chief Raila Odinga to be elected president in the next election.
