Ijara MP Ahmed Abass and his Homa Bay Town counterpart Peter Kaluma have stated that such a policy is the only way to ensure equity among all Kenyans because the minority communities will enjoy a share of the country's resources.

"This is the only way a Rendile, Oromo or Ogiek will become president. Otherwise, the seat will be a preserve of a few populous tribes," said Abass.

On his part, Kaluma said that the initiative was welcomed because a country with 42 tribes cannot have one or two tribes occupying the presidency for decades.

"This is a good thing and I support it. We cannot have one or two tribes locking up votes for themselves for several decades. When will other tribes rule Kenya?" Kaluma posed.

The two legislators who were addressing the press at parliament building proposed the creation of a national council of elders to replace the National Cohesion and Integration Commission.

The council will be mandated with harmonising the sharing of leadership position among communities.
