With only 42 days remaining to the August 8 elections, Taita Taveta Women Representative Joyce Lay has hit the campaign trail in her bid to make history as the first elected woman Senator in the country.
The lawmaker who severed ties with the party that sponsored her to parliament, ODM, will now be vying on a Jubilee Party ticket which is trying to made inroads in the pro-opposition county.Faced with a huge challenge of dislodging ODM dominance in the region if she is to realize her dream, Lay has hit the ground running selling her policies to the electorate. On Friday, the lawmaker took her campaigns to Mwatate sub-county.While making stops at Kironge, Mwakaleri, Kishamba and Kishau, the legislator sensitized the residents on the roles of a Senator.Lay said should she win the seat currently held by Dan Mwazo, she will oversee the revenue collection in the county and ensure every cent is accounted for.She further promised to ensure citizen participation in the leadership of the county.Despite being from Jubilee, an unpopular party in the region, Lay is already a popular political figure on the ground and she may prove to be a formidable political force during the August elections.
