Raila Odinga’s Orange Democratic Movement has removed its seven rebel members from all parliamentary committees.
ODM said the move seeks to enforce discipline within the party.
Chief Whip Thomas Mwadeghu communicated the party’s decision to Speaker Justin Muturi, who informed the house Tuesday afternoon.
Those discharged from the parliamentary committees are MPs Ababu Namwamba (Budalangi), James Rege (Rachuonyo), John Waluke (Sirisia), Stephen Kariuki (Mathare), Mpuri Aburi (Tigania East), Cyprian Iringo (Igembe Central) and Nominated MP Isaac Mwaura.
Apart from Namwamba who is now the leader of FPK, the rest have declared publicly their support for the Jubilee Party, led by President Uhuru Kenyatta and DP William Ruto.
Speaker Muturi said the notice by the party was in line with the Standing Orders.
However, the Chair of Justice and Legal Affairs Samuel Chepkonga drew the attention of the Speaker to a petition by over 100 members to amend the standing orders in order to remove provisions that go against the constitutional rights of MPs.
But Muturi declined to allow debate on the matter and asked members to debate the recommendation of the report on amendments to Standing Orders once the Committee on Rules and Procedures tables its report before the House.
Some of the de-whipped legislators have however said the move will not affect them in any way.
Sirisia MP Waluke said he was selected to the House Committee because he was already an MP, elected by his constituents, and not ODM party.
