Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party is now targeting secondary schools in Kisumu County for a massive National Identification card and voter registration in preparation for 2017 general elections.
The ODM branch Kisumu County argued that the move will ensure that they get a good number of youthful voters come the next General elections.
The county branch chairperson Dave Okwatch said the party needed more voters to ensure ODM clinches the presidency and majority seats in both houses of parliament, hence early voter registration for the youth.
Okwatch was speaking yesterday during an ODM county meeting in which voter registration was part of the agenda.
The meeting had brought together five officials from each of the seven Sub-Counties of Kisumu and the county branch officials totaling to at least 62 delegates from the region.
“We agreed that every sub-county branch to come up with a list of the number of Secondary schools in their jurisdiction and the number of students who have attained the age of 18 years for us to kick start the registration,” said Okwatch.
After the lists are brought by the branch officials, the exercise will be undertaken in market places where other members of the public will have a chance to join in the registration for ID cards.
Okwatch said the exercise will be sponsored by Kisumu women representative Rose Nyamunga and it will continue every year until 2017.
Two weeks ago, while launching the Gor Mahia FC bread in Kisumu, ODM party leader Raila Odinga urged the youth to be armed with their national ID cards and the voters’ card in readiness for the elections.
“We have another chance for the presidency, let us be armed with the two weapons so that we cast our vote overwhelmingly for the presidency and the other elective positions,” said Raila.
