Raila Odinga-led Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has called on President Uhuru Kenyatta to declare the floods a national disaster.

Through party spokesman Philip Etale, ODM said all government agencies should be mobilised to address the havoc which has been caused by the ongoing heavy rains.

"Floods are killing our people. No one is safe. People can't sleep in peace because of the raving floods. Floods should be declared a national disaster," Etale tweeted on Thursday.

Also in another statement sent to newsrooms, the opposition outfit observed the floods situation was about to get out of hand and asked Kenyans to remain vigilant.

"The Party commiserates with all the victims of the flooding currently being experienced in the country and urges the government to declare the floods a national disaster.

We further urge those living in flood prone areas to move to safer ground for their safety," read part of the document.

While reacting to the Solai Dam tragedy which occured on Wednesday night, Wiper Deputy Party Leader Mutula Kilonzo Junior accused the State of keeping mum as floods continue killing people, adding that the disaster response unit in the country needs restructuring.

"What is happening now is that people are waiting for the president to declare a national disaster for them to act; it seems oblivious," Mutula said on Thursday during a show on Citizen TV.
