The Orange Democratic Youth League Kisii county branch plans to mobilise at least 300,000 new voters to get registered by IEBC ahead of 2017 polls.
Chairman Erick Janganya said his team has mobilised all party grassroots leaders across the nine sub counties to galvanise women and youths to register during the exercise that kicks off mid this month.
“In Kisii, we have about 800,000 eligible voters but only half of those were registered in 2013. We have communicated to our grassroots team and as their chair, I am optimistic that we will mobilise women and youths to register in numbers,” he said.
Janganya who was speaking on Monday evening at Kenyenya playground during a football tournament said the ODM party was keen to use social activities such as sport to attract more eligible people to register.
“We want to use such football tournaments to mobilize youths to register and sensitize them importance of participating in electoral processes,” Mr Janganya, who is also SONU’s outgoing secretary general noted.
Chief Guest Elizabeth Ongwae urged youths to register in numbers and back one of their own in various elective positions in 2017 polls.
“I always hear people telling you that you are leaders of tomorrow. That tomorrow is now and you have no option other than registering as voters and backing your fellow youths in elections. I am sure you can do it,” she said.
