Nyamira South Sub County children’s officer, Purity Kamonya, has bemoaned increased cases of defilement of minors in the region in the past year. Kamonya said there is steady growth in number of girl child defilement and rape cases on children. Speaking in a meeting convened at Nyamira County headquarters, Kamonya claimed that many cases reported to her office involved school children and boda boda operators who enticed teenagers and lured them to their dragnets through free lifts on motorcycles. “Many cases do not succeed in the court because of delayed reporting of incidents and therefore loss of evidence to fix perpetrators,” said Kamonya. She urged caregivers and parents of victims to immediately report the incidences to location children officers or to her office immediately the act is done in order for justice to be got. Kamonya cautioned parents and guardians accepting out of court settlement of defilement cases and asked them to instead report to relevant authorities as the law prohibited such negotiations. “There is need to create awareness of the vice to vulnerable and sharing of information of any cases from the administration officers, hospitals to children’s offices and counselling of the victims which could help them heal the trauma and ordeal that they go through,” she said.
