Kisii South sub-county children Officer Samson Ngariba has decried increased cases of child defilement perpetrated by relatives and teachers of the minors.
Speaking in his office today, the officer said according to the police, about 7 defilement cases are reported every week translating to about 30 cases per month.
Mr Ngariba also added that despite the fact that they have kept on arresting the culprits the situation is getting worse and there was a need for change.
“Most of the cases before the court in Kisii, almost 50 percent are related to sexual offences of minors yet local leaders do not tackle it as a serious concern,” he added.
He cautioned the police officers, chiefs, parents and elders who participate in ‘kangaroo’ courts that allow the culprits go unpunished that they will be dealt with according to the law.
The crime, he said is also becoming rampant under the watchful eyes of local law enforcement officers, parents, religious and political leaders who do not condemn it.
The commissioner challenged parents to watch over their children especially girls during the festive season to guard against reckless behaviour that might force them drop out of school.
