Police officers in Naivasha who protect traders selling outlawed alcohol will be punished, Naivasha Deputy County Commissioner Abraham Kemboi has said.

Kemboi said despite the recent crackdown on unlicensed alcohol trade, the business was still rife at Maai Mahiu in Naivasha Sub-County.

“We have information that there are still pockets of drunkards in Maai Mahiu. Any officer condoning this habit will be dealt with firmly," Kemboi said.

He was addressing the press after conducting raids on illicit beer dens at Maai Mahiu town on Wednesday. He spoke as a group of women demonstrated in the town to protest continued consumption of banned alcohol.

The demonstrators claimed most sellers of illicit liquor had resumed business after the conclusion of a crackdown recently called by government to fight the sale of substandard alcohol in bars.

The women said that religious leaders and the general public were ready to support the government in the fight against illicit brews.

They that cases of people roaming the town during the day while drunk had been reported raising concern that some unscrupulous traders were still playing hide and seek with authorities.

Kemboi assured the residents of the government’s commitment to completely eradicate consumption of illicit brews not only in the area but the whole sub county.

He urged the residents to report any cases of brewers and even the drinkers while promising to deal ruthlessly with officers compromising government’s efforts to completely wipe out the vice.

“I want to urge members of the public to report any cases of misconduct by any of the administrators so that action is taken on time,” Kemboi said.
