Kenyan-born defender Philip Mwene has completed his dream move to Bundesliga side FSV Mainz 05 from relegated side after signing a three-year deal on Thursday.
Born to a Kenyan father and an Austrian mother, the speedy wing-back sealed the free-transfer move from his former side FC Kaiserslautern which was sadly relegated to the third tier in the just concluded 2017/2018 season.
According to Mainz 05 sporting director Rouven Schroder, the 24-year-old is a big catch to the club and they are looking up to his exploits in the impending season.
"Phillip Mwene is a very talented player, strong and flexible outside tracker, who has consistently developed into a leader in the Bundesliga in his career, and we see in him the potential to take the next steps in the direction and we are looking forward to it that he has decided a future with Mainz 05," Schroder said.
Mwene was one of the standout stars in the second tier league scoring four times and registering six assists for Kaiserslautern although that was not enough to save them from the relegation axe.
Although he has spent most of his life in his maternal nation, he is nonetheless yet to feature for the Austrian national side making him eligible to turn out for Harambee Stars.
The move no doubt makes him the first Kenyan to turn out for the German Bundesliga.
