The national government has warned county governments against approving illegal structures to prevent loss of lives and property.
Kisii county commissioner Chege Mwangi warned that the national government will not watch as officers mandated to oversee the approval process of constructions of structures in towns mess up with the process.
“We have some building in this area that have been marked X but the construction is still ongoing," said Mwangi.
"What really happened to enable their owners to continue with the process?”, he questioned.
Speaking while meeting some of the officials from the National Construction Authority in his office, the Commissioner warned that disciplinary action will be taken against officers who allow illegal constructions to continue.
He said that though the approval process on the construction of buildings in urban centers was a county government function, the national government will not be silent as Kenyans continue to lose lives and property because of a few greedy individuals.
“We don’t want to risk our residents just because of some few individuals and therefore there is need for every construction official to play his role,” he added.
He also raised concern over illegal extensions on old buildings in Kisii town.
