They say that they are glaring at a huge danger of contracting waterborne diseases like typhoid and cholera since they are fetching their water from a local spring with contaminated water.

"We do not know what the problem is because we have been trying to contact water officials from Juja sub-county water department to no avail. The water ran out immediately after the New Year's day," said Daisy Wairimu, a hotel operator on Wednesday.

They say that the area popularly known as 'Runda' is usually hit by water shortages but this time round it has lasted for far too long.

"It is not the first time that we are experiencing a water shortage in this area. It usually happens many times but it doesn't last for more than two days," said Francis Muriu, a resident.

The spring from which the residents have been drawing water for their domestic use, they say, is usually used by motorbike riders to clean their motorbikes.

"The water is not suitable for domestic consumption at all but we have to use it because it is then only available water in the vicinity. We have no option," Lucy Wambui, another resident said.

Geoffrey Mungai, a water officer from Juja water department living in the neighbourhood said the department was aware of the problem and was working to rectify the matter.

"We are aware of the water problem in Runda and it won't take too long before we resolve the problem. Residents just need to be a little more patient," said Mungai.
