In a Thursday afternoon press conference, commissioner Lilian Bokeyee said out of the 1.6 million signatures presented to the electoral body, only 1,210,707 entries had national identity (ID), passport numbers and signatures.

Bokeyee said they removed records which had signatures and no ID or passport numbers.

She said only records with ID numbers and signatures were taken to the next stage of verification.

She added that many of the booklets had entries that were illegible due to poor handwriting.

Bokeyee said some records were cancelled but were not counter-signed, hence creating doubt of their validity.

In some booklets, one signature was used under several names, according to the commission.

The commissioner said 172 booklets presented were handwritten while 43 were printed.

Only 728,551 were clean records of people appearing in the register. Some booklets were torn while others were completely empty.

IEBC chairman Issack Hassan said the number of signatures collected by Cord fell short of the required 1 million.

The commission maintained that by the end of the verification exercise, only 891, 598 signatures were valid.

Cord co-principals Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetang'ula earlier dismissed the verification exercise results, accusing IEBC of being used by Jubilee to disenfranchise the people from determining the fate of their campaign.

Cord claimed IEBC was the last port of call after all other Jubilee efforts to frustrate the referendum failed.
