Kibera MP,Ken Okoth has voiced out his concern on the need to review the existing laws on abortion.

He said this will help free affected women from the guilt subjected to them regarding abortion cases.

According to Okoth, issues surrounding abortion not only affect women but also the society at large and thus, the need to amend the current provisions and guidelines regarding abortion in Kenya.

‘'Men must at all times be champions. Our women and girls do not make themselves pregnant and so we should end this popular notion that any case of abortion is a crime,’’ said Okoth.

The legislator's sentiments come at a time when a parliamentary committee on Human rights held a two-day seminar to listen to heart touching stories from women who have procured abortion using unorthodox strategies that include consumption of detergents.

According to a submission by the Centre for Reproductive Rights, women have been undergoing trauma and untold physical pain as a result of substandard services offered to them by health quacks.

Although the law only permits abortion at special occasions and upon the recommendation of a qualified medical doctor, health practitioners still view the guidelines as being inadequate.
