Former Education Cabinet Secretary and 2013 presidential candidate James Ole Kiyapi has weighed in on the raging debate over police’s handling of NASA’s anti-IEBC protests.Ole Kiyapi took to twitter to express his disappointment with apparent use of excessive force by anti-riot police on NASA protesters urging for employment of constitutionally and legally acceptable means of dealing with the protests.“Are police in Kenya incapable of restoring public order without shooting people? It is the blood we carelessly shed that hinders our peace!” he tweeted. In recent days, Kiyapi has been on the forefront in calling for an amicable resolution of the on-going political standoff between ruling party Jubilee and opposition coalition NASA over the October 26, 2017 fresh elections. While Jubilee and electoral agency IEBC have insisted that the elections will proceed as planned, NASA has stood its ground by reiterating that there will be no election on the scheduled date until electoral reforms are effected.Among the changes that NASA leader Raila Odinga wants to see is the cancellation of the tender awarded to Dubai-based firm Al Ghurair for the printing of ballot materials, and technology firm OT-Morpho for the delivery of technology for the fresh elections, and resignation of IEBC commissioners led by CEO Ezra Chiloba for allegedly bugling the August 8 elections.Raila also wants Jubilee to desist from pushing for amendments to the Elections Law, which have since been approved by parliament and forwarded to President Uhuru Kenyatta for assent. While this happens, IECB has gone ahead to gazette six other candidates that had been left out of the list of candidates for the fresh elections.Days after the Supreme Court ordered that fresh presidential elections be held, IEBC gazetted the names of the top two candidates Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga, but had to add all the other candidates in compliance with the High Court ruling which ordered that Thirdway Alliance candidate Ekuru Aukot be added to the list.Raila Odinga has however announced that he has withdrawn from the race, rubbishing reports that he has to sign Form 24A to officially withdraw.
