Kenya Striker Michael Ogada Olunga played for 90 minutes but failed to score as his Girona FC team held former Spanish top flight (La Liga) Champions Atletico Madrid 1-1.
The match played at Atletico Madrid’s Wanda Metropolitano stadium saw French international Antoine Griezman score for the home team in 34th minute before Portu leveled scores for Girona in the 73rd minute.
Last weekend, the Kenyan striker came from the bench to score three goals and provide one assist as Girona FC thrashed Las Palmas UD 6-0 in a La Liga match.
He becomes the first player with Kenyan roots to score a hat trick in a Spanish top flight match in history. His feat was lauded by Kenyans of all walks of life, key among them President Uhuru Kenyatta and National Super Alliance (NASA) leader Raila Odinga.
Olunga’s Girona FC lies 8th on the La Liga table with 27 points after 20 rounds of play this season.
Michael Olunga is remembered for helping Gor Mahia win the Kenya Premier League title in 2015. He joined Swedish side Djurgårdens IF in 2016.
He is playing for Girona on a season long loan deal from Chinese side Guizhou Zhicheng he joined last year.
