Residents of Mwembe Kuku in Mombasa are living in a state of panic after the descendants of Sultan of Zanzibar returned from Oman, threatening to evict them from the land they have occupied for years.
The more than 3,000 residents said they have called upon the National Lands Commission (NLC) to intervene in the matter following the return of the grandchildren of the Liwali’s.
In a letter dated July 29, NLC chairman Muhammad Swazuri placed a caveat on the pieces of land to stop the involved parties from selling them.
According to Mwembe Kuku Welfare Society Spokesman Abdallahi Farah, the sultan’s grandchildren lawyers’ have asked them to pay Sh8 million, failure to which they will be evicted.
Farah urged President Uhuru Kenyatta to intervene just like he did with the Waitiki Land.
“We are asking President Uhuru Kenyatta to intervene and negotiate with the descendants of the Sultan of Zanzibar like he did with the Waitiki Farm in Likoni to stop our impending eviction,” said Farah, as quoted by the Standard.
The issue of land has remained one of the greatest challenges facing residents at the Coast over the years.
