Senator Hassan Omar is confident that he can win the Mombasa governor seat even without endorsement by opposition leader Raila Odinga.
Omar said the people of the coastal county believe in his leadership and will elect him as their county boss whether or not he is recommended by a National Super Alliance (NASA) principal.
"I do not need the endorsement of the Kamba or Luo communities because I know I am in their souls. I do not need to be going round with my principals to win," Omar said in Chaani, Changamwe.
The hopeful is vying on the Kalonzo Musyoka-led Wiper Democratic Movement (WDM-K) party.
Omar took a swipe at his rival the incumbent Governor Hassan Joho, saying he moves around taking photos with NASA presidential candidate Raila Odinga “thinking that he will be elected”.
The Senator urged Changamwe residents to rally behind his bid to oust Joho whom he accused of failing to deliver for the people of Mombasa.
"Nairobi and Mombasa are among the worst rated counties in NASA’s manifesto and that is why I am telling the NASA principals that you cannot change Mombasa without changing Hassan Joho," he said as quoted by the Daily Nation.
Omar was accompanied by Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jnr and other candidates for various seats in Mombasa vying on Wiper ticket.
