Reacting during Senate House proceedings, Hassan Omar described the move as ill motivated, adding that it does not have room for existence in the present Kenyan politics.

“There is a possibility that some non performing parliamentarians could have liaised with incompetent governors to cushion them from stiff competition come 2017,” said Omar.

Omar who has expressed intentions to unseat the current Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho, said it was unrealistic to bar senators or even members of county assemblies from running for any elective post in the land, as long as they are qualified and meet the minimum specifications spelt out in the constitution.

Other senators who have opposed the move include Kipchumba Murkomen (Elgeyo-Marakwet), Anyang Nyongo (Kisumu), Isaac Melly (Uasin Gishu) among others.

The current stand off is expected to renew rivalry between the members of the National Assembly and senators.
